Development Trends of my country’s Satellite Navigation and Location Services Market in 2021

In the more than ten years since the Beidou-3 project was launched in 2009 and the current promotion and application of Beidou-3, with the continuous expansion of my country's satellite navigation system application fields, the satellite navigation industry has formed a relatively complete industrial system. The performance of navigation products and services has continued to improve, the scope of applications has continued to expand, and the market size has grown rapidly. Currently, my country's satellite navigation and location service industry is in a stage of rapid growth.

In addition, with the strong support of the implementation of national strategies and macro policies, and on the basis that various regions have regarded the satellite navigation industry as the focus of innovation work, my country's satellite navigation and location service industry has ushered in an upgrade and development change brought about by technological integration innovation and industrial integration development. In the future, the development of my country's satellite navigation and location services market will usher in these five market development trends.

Although satellite navigation technology has not been in my country for a long time, with the development of the market and the advancement of technology, my country's navigation and location service industry is gradually taking shape, and a complete industrial chain is being formed. From 2012 to 2019, the scale of my country's satellite navigation and location services industry has grown steadily at an annual growth rate of approximately 20%.

At present, my country's satellite navigation and location service industry chain has formed a complete internal cycle. Looking at the development history of the navigation industry in the United States, Japan and other countries,my country's navigation and location service industry will eventually develop into a navigation information service system dominated by operators, with PND and PDA carriers as the main carriers, and OEM carriers as the supplement.

In the "White Paper on the Development of China's Satellite Navigation and Location Services Industry (2020)", the key points for the development of navigation and location-related services based on the Beidou-3 navigation system are also proposed:

• Based on the technical advantages of Beidou-3, seven major services will be comprehensively promoted: basic navigation services, ground-based enhanced services, satellite-based enhanced services, global SMS communication services, regional short message communication services, search and rescue services and precision single-point services;

• "+Beidou" will take the needs of all walks of life as the premise, make full use of Beidou technology to serve industrial transformation, upgrading and transformation, replacement and leapfrog development, and gradually promote the comprehensive development of the space-time information service industry within ten years;

• The integration of navigation and communication will enter the practical stage. Especially in the deployment and development process of 5G, we can make full use of existing resources, including navigation and communication resources, and strive to build a spatio-temporal multi-information source, perception, transmission, and service integrated network, and use the crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, and crowd-creation model to promote infrastructure construction through collective efforts, including service providers and consumer user groups, to achieve co-construction, sharing, and win-win results.

With the current development of many low-orbit broadband communication satellite constellation plans around the world, constellations with hundreds or thousands of satellites have begun to design communication and navigation as integrated loads. Among them, the integrated integration of space-based navigation and communication is expected to be carried out first, followed by the integration of ground-based communication and navigation. The integrated operation of 5G and WiFi networks may become a future development trend.

Navigation applications change from single constellation to multi-constellation compatibility mechanism

Satellite navigation has become the only means to replace traditional navigation, positioning and timing in most countries and regions.

In the four major application fields of sea, land, air and space, satellite navigation information will be used wherever dynamic or static positioning, attitude determination, timing and navigation information is required, driving the rapid development of the satellite navigation application industry. The future development trend of global satellite navigation systems is: satellite navigation applications will transform from single constellations to multi-constellation compatibility mechanisms, and satellite navigation systems will develop towards multi-polar systems.

The realization of multi-system integration development is mainly based on the cooperation and compatibility of several major satellite navigation systems in the world.Under the current circumstances, current users can switch to different satellite navigation systems according to different needs, which fully reflects the complementarity of different satellite navigation systems and can also bring better improvements to the accuracy and availability of the system.

At present, my country has signed an agreement with the United States in November 2017 to achieve radio frequency compatibility between the Beidou satellite navigation system and the GPS satellite navigation system in the signal field. At the same time, it signed an agreement with Russia in August 2019, indicating that the Beidou satellite navigation system will also be compatible and interoperable with the GLONASS satellite navigation system.

According to data from the "2020 China Satellite Navigation and Location Services Industry Development White Paper" previously released by the China Satellite Navigation and Positioning Association, the overall output value of my country's satellite navigation and location services industry reached 345 billion yuan in 2019, an increase of 14.4% compared with 2017. Among them, the core output value of industries directly related to the research and development and application of satellite navigation technology, including chips, devices, algorithms, software, navigation data, terminal equipment, infrastructure, etc., reached 116.6 billion yuan, accounting for 33.8% of the total output value.

It can be clearly seen that the development of my country's satellite navigation and location service industry has reached a certain scale, and the development of industrialization must move toward specialization. Only specialization can produce branded products.At present, specialized manufacturing enterprises have emerged in our country, such as those that specialize in the production of satellite navigation antennas, vehicle terminals, and navigation hardware, as well as those that specialize in the production of electronic maps and system integration and information services.

Intelligent transportation remains an important market for civilian applications

It is understood that the Beidou global navigation system has been widely used in transportation, agriculture, forestry and fishery, hydrological monitoring, meteorological forecasting, communication systems, power dispatching, disaster relief and mitigation, public security and other fields since it was launched for more than half a year. It has been integrated into the country's core infrastructure and has produced significant economic and social benefits.

Especially in the transportation industry, the transportation department's policy on the promotion and application of Beidou products in the civilian market is an important factor in the development of the navigation product market in the transportation field.Currently, the Ministry of Transport has planned many demonstration projects in the Beidou field, including land projects, water projects and civil aviation projects.In the future, some application demonstration systems for infrastructure monitoring and infrastructure construction will be added according to changes in the situation.It is foreseeable that my country's transportation field will become an important application market for the navigation and location service industry.

Taking Guangdong as an example, the previously submitted collective proposal "Recommendations on Promoting the Development of the Ecological Chain of Beidou Emerging Industries in Our Province" proposed to develop the smart transportation industry in Guangdong Province based on Beidou satellite positioning data, combined with big data and artificial intelligence technology.

Integrated innovation promotes industrial upgrading

With the completion and official opening of the Beidou-3 navigation system in 2020 and the shrinkage of the traditional application market in the domestic satellite navigation industry,The promotion of two integrated innovations, "Beidou+" and "+Beidou", will become the main growth point of the satellite navigation application market.Among them, spatio-temporal information, as a rigid requirement for intelligent sensing, is the core technology for the development of future intelligent services. Integrated innovation is an inevitable choice for industrial development and a key factor for Beidou upgrade and leapfrog.

At present, my country's satellite navigation and location service industry chain has entered the strong development period and heyday of applications and services from the construction and development stage of navigation systems. In the future, the development focus of my country's satellite navigation and location service industry will shift to integrated development with various industries, giving full play to the powerful role of the satellite navigation and location service industry in the transformation and integration of traditional industries.Including unmanned systems and the Internet of Things, new space-time technologies and service industries that can achieve intelligent integration and interconnection of everything based on satellite navigation.
